The Castle of Corniglio |
The hostel has been made from the recent restructuring of a medieval wing of Corniglio Castle.
Located on a spur of rock at 700 metres above sea level, at the confluence of the Alta Val Parma and the Val Bratica, the hostel also boasts the beauty of this ancient construction style, built entirely from sandstone after the first millennium by the Bishop of Parma and the Town Council.
It is now, however, the only remaining example of the castles which defended the Alta Val Parma.
The castle of Corniglio and the adjacent lands belonged first to the Rossi family, then to the Farnese family, who alternated in periods of battle with the Bishop of Parma who claimed feudal rights.
In 1820, it was surrendered by the Duchess Maria Luigia to the Town Council.
The hostel can hold up to:
. 50 people
. distributed in 8 rooms of 8, 6 and 4 place
. 10 toilets with W.C and 6 showers
. one modern kitchen-living room.
It is possible to make use of:
. a tourist information office
. a reception, a left-luggage deposit
. a dining- living room
. A lift serves all the floors of the hostel.
The hostel has been structured so as to host families, school trips and groups, and it is possible to make use of guided visits within the Cento Laghi (Hundred Lakes) Park.
In addition to the more common tourist attractions located within the park, the entire valley has a wealth of elements of guaranteed historical interest, as well as naturalist and scenic interest.
The ancient villages, testimonial to the ancient presence of man, in many cases remind us of a world which, unfortunately, no longer belongs to us.
The numerous "maestās" (iconographic paintings), which bear witness to the faith and tradition held down through the centuries.
The fresh and clean springs, the humid areas of great interest to lovers of botany, and the numerous geological formations, sure to excite the interest of those keen on the research and study of minerals; together these complete the wealth of attractions, making this Valley certainly one of the most enticing of all the Apennines.
The beauty of the panorama which can be enjoyed from its bastions, the pure air of an unpolluted environment, excellent gastronomic traditions and the warmth of the people make a stay at the Hostel of Corniglio Castle a relaxing and pleasant experience.
